Track Plans

One of the most fascinating things about this hobby is the planning and building of a model railroad that has all the features of an actual railroad system. With today's wide selection of tracks and accessories it is easy to duplicate any of the operations of the big railroads.

We start with developing a custom track plan from your preferences, based on your drawings or previously published designs. Plans should also include any landscaping, roads, rural and industrial areas.

We can also construct your layout from a custom design with our CAD system, and relieve you of the hassle of creating a complex track plan with intricate wiring schematics and multilevel configurations. We can design railroads for virtually any scale, for indoor or outdoor use.

If you don't have a railroad design plan we can have a our team create a custom plan and theme to fit your budget. This could take a few weeks or months depending on the specifications of the project to develop and would require a fee because of the research time involved. Most custom railroad plans cost range between $1,200-$4,500 with a detailed budget/estimate included.

Track
Once the plan is ready, we can order the track needed for the railroad. We can also use any track you may already own if it is in good, like-new condition. We spend a great deal of time on the trackwork phase of construction and we must have a derailment-free operation on every layout we build. The track we will use must be a high-quality product.

Trackwork
We carefully gauge at all points, especially through turnouts and at rail joints. All rail joiners on curves will be soldered. Those on straight trackage are not (to allow for expansion/contraction). Spiral easements (transition curves) greatly enhance operation, especially on tight radius curves, and can be super-elevated. Separate electrical feeders will be supplied throughout the track, to ensure electrical continuity. On the benchwork we use birch plywood for a sub-roadbed construction material to provide a solid base for the track.
